Jakarta Reuse Movement: An Attempt to Make Reuse Lifestyle More Accessible

Jakarta, 1 July 2022 – The Indonesian Plastic Bag Diet Movement (also known as Gerakan Indonesia Diet Kantong Plastik – GIDKP) and Zero Waste Living Lab (ZWLL) Enviu have introduced Jakarta Reuse Movement to create an ecosystem that supports the reuse lifestyle in Jakarta. This program aims to reduce single-use plastics (SUP) from daily products, which are still a major problem from daily consumption, such as food packaging, household product packaging and plastics from online food delivery services

Jakarta needs to increase its efforts to reduce single-use plastic. The city has had the regulation to ban plastic bags since 2020. After two years of implementation, the public awareness of reducing the consumption of SUP has increased. To achieve a 30% reduction of plastic waste in 2025, Jakarta needs to leverage the efforts to reduce SUP, other than plastic bags.

“In addition to banning plastic bags, the reduction of SUP waste can be tackled by pursuing a convenient and viable reuse system. The lack of access to reuse alternatives is believed to be one of the biggest barriers to adopting the reuse lifestyle. The Jakarta Reuse Movement seeks to enter the consumption chain by creating a system and educating people about the reuse lifestyle alternatives,” said Tiza Mafira, Executive Director, GIDKP.

“The initiative will benefit the environment greatly and make us all aware of the need to change for the better and reduce single-use plastic consumption. It is our responsibility to pass on the environment we live in to our children and grandchildren in the future. We, as Jakartans, therefore, value this movement. I am grateful for the launch of the Jakarta Reuse Movement,” said Anies Baswedan, Gubernur DKI Jakarta.

Collaborating with GIDKP is ZWLL Enviu, a venture builder that kick-starts impact-driven companies aimed at creating environmental and social impact.

“Food packaging, household product packaging or disposable cutlery are polluting Jakarta’s waters. Even though it seems more economical, single-use packaging waste is difficult to recycle, thus increasing the cost of local waste management and reducing the quality of our environment. The Jakarta Reuse Movement provides first-hand experience of reuse alternatives with Enviu’s world-changing companies,” said Darina Maulana, Indonesia Program Lead, Zero Waste Living Lab, Enviu.

Enviu’s tech-based startups participating in the movement are QYOS, Koinpack and ALLAS. QYOS is a startup that provides automatic refill machines for household products in shops near the housing complex. Koinpack operates a tech-enabled reusable packaging system for consumer goods on a deposit and reward model to replace sachets and other types of single-use packaging. ALLAS is the first circular food delivery packaging in Jakarta.

“Together with our ventures, we would like to showcase that the reuse lifestyle is attainable and can be for everyone and stakeholders, including producers, retailers and consumers. The Jakarta Reuse Movement will be monitored regularly with the hope that we can expand the implementation to areas surrounding Jakarta and with more stakeholders on board,” said Darina.

“Stakeholder collaborations are essential to creating a massive reuse ecosystem. This massive change needs the involvement and commitment of all stakeholders. Government as the regulator; manufacturers, retailers, and other enterprises as business sectors, also the civil society as consumers,” enclosed Tiza.
