Plasticdiet Indonesia and ITDC Develop Waste Management System at Music Festival

In an effort to create an less waste music event, Plasticdiet Indonesia and Injourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) have once again established a strategic partnership to implement comprehensive waste management, including the introduction of a reuse protocol at the International Golo Mori Jazz 2025. This initiative aims to reduce the use of single-use plastics and raise awareness of responsible waste management among the hundreds to thousands of spectators.

Ahead of the music event at the Golo Mori Convention Center, in December 2024, ITDC collaborated with Plasticdiet Indonesia to organize a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and waste management training. These activities involved a range of stakeholders, including local government, community groups, and businesses, introducing a waste management system (Zero Waste 101) and formulating a practical and relevant action plan for waste management implementation. One of the key materials presented was a case study on the successful application of the reuse protocol at the 2024 Mandalika MotoGP, which served as a direct inspiration for developing a similar system at Golo Mori.

During the International Golo Mori Jazz 2025 event, waste management procedures were progressively implemented across the event area. Measures included the provision of drinking water refill stations, segregated waste bins (organic, plastic, and paper), consumer education on waste separation, and assistance to vendors in serving food and beverages prioritizing buffet-style service to minimize the use of single-use plastic packaging. This first step of waste management system was implemented in collaboration with the “Peduli Sampah Golo Mori” Community under the Todo Cama consortium based in Labuan Bajo.

One of the early indicators of success in the waste management efforts at the International Golo Mori Jazz 2025 was the very minimal numbers of mixed waste in the segregated bins provided. A major contributing factor to this success was the involvement of dedicated educators stationed at each waste disposal point, who continuously provided information about waste separation from the beginning to the end of the event. Waste management information was also disseminated to performers and their crew.

The initial implementation of a waste management system at this international music event marks an important milestone toward establishing sustainable event standards, with a strong emphasis on comprehensive waste management practices. Thus, the event not only provided entertainment for the public but also served as an educational platform to promote environmental stewardship in Indonesia’s priority tourism areas under ITDC’s management.
