Plastic Free Shopping Challenge in Bandung City

Bandung (16 February 2022). Providing education to the public is the main objective of the Plastic Free Market program. Various activities have been carried out so that consumers can understand and start changing their behavior to reduce the use of single-use plastic. One educational activity is experimental social activities, collaborating with Cihapit Village and Kebon Pisang Village. These two sub-districts are the sub-districts where Cihapit and Kosambi markets are located. Before this social experimental activity began, a plastic-free shopping challenge activity was carried out in both markets. This challenging activity was conducted to inform the public and increase consumer awareness regarding the Plastic Free Market program at Cihapit and Kosambi Markets.

The experimental social activity was held on 15-16 February 2022, while the plastic-free shopping challenge activity was born on 11-14 February 2022 at Cihapit and Kosambi markets.
The challenge activity was carried out for several days by rewarding consumers who had reduced the use of single-use plastic when shopping at the market. This reward is intended to encourage consumers to be more enthusiastic about shopping at the market without using single-use plastic and other alternatives. Apart from that, they can also invite relatives or family to take part in this challenge.
Collaborative social experimental activities involve 78 people from representatives of communities around the Cihapit and Kebon Pisang regions as consumers to carry out plastic-free shopping. This social practical activity was carried out by representatives of the community shopping directly at the market by making a shopping list first before shopping at the market and then preparing alternative reusable containers and environmentally friendly bags, for example, to shop for wet food/salted fish, you can use food containers/containers. Reusable food/baskets: for dry food ingredients, you can use produce bags/put them directly into the KBRL, and specifically for eggs, you can use reusable food containers and mix them with rice so that the eggs don’t break easily.
When shopping, community representatives also indirectly show and remind other consumers and business actors that shopping without using single-use plastic is possible by preparing before shopping and not offering single-use plastic during transactions. This activity can also encourage market traders to limit single-use plastic in their stalls by conducting social experiments in collaboration with the Region/Community.
