Increasing Environmental Awareness, LLHPB PP ‘Aisyiyah and Plastic Bag Diet, Campaign to Ban Single-Use Plastics in Traditional Markets

The Indonesian Plastic Bag Diet Movement (GIDKP) is collaborating with the Aisyiyah Central Leadership Institute for the Environment and Disaster Management (LLHPB) in implementing a program to increase environmental awareness through a religious approach in order to support Governor Regulation No. 142/2019 concerning the Obligation to Use Shopping Bags Environmentally Friendly at the People’s Market. To start and disseminate this program, GIDKP together with LLHPB PP ‘Aisyiyah held a Kick Off Program for Increasing Environmental Awareness through a Religious Approach: Banning Single-Use Plastics in Traditional Markets, on Friday 12 August 2022 at Tebet Market, South Jakarta City, DKI Jakarta. This event presents elements from the local government, market managers, traders, consumers, community groups around the market.

The aim of holding this Kick Off is, firstly, to introduce this program to the people of Jakarta, especially traders and consumers of West Tebet Market. Second, to provide information to the public and organizations/stakeholders so that they can be involved and able to collaborate in efforts to increase awareness to support the importance of banning the use of single-use plastics in traditional markets. And third, invite traders, consumers and community groups to take part in campaigning for a plastic-free market.

Head of the Cleanliness Management Division of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service, Rommel Pasaribu, appreciated the implementation of this program. “I am very happy because the South Jakarta area, specifically West Tebet, was used as the first area for the movement for love of the environment.” he said. According to the results of a survey conducted by the agency, the results of monitoring carried out by the Environmental Service showed that the general results were almost 80-90% on average, shops or supermarkets no longer provide single-use plastic shopping bags, while people’s markets have not produced satisfactory results. , the result is around below 40%.

On this occasion, the Chairperson of the South Jakarta ‘Aisyiyah Regional Leadership, Nurdiati Akma, also reminded us that efforts to care about cleanliness and environmental sustainability, including joint action in reducing the use of single-use plastic, are part of worship. “Let’s now prepare ourselves for our afterlife affairs, where we need to remember the damage that could arise in the future due to the accumulation of plastic waste.” he asked.

Meanwhile, Tiza Mafira, Executive Director of GIDKP (Indonesian Plastic Bag Diet Movement) explained the challenges and focus of this program. “What is still a challenge at the moment is not the use of single-use plastic from traders selling dry goods, but rather those selling wet materials such as selling food and drinks in traditional markets. Actually there are solutions, such as bringing a place to eat, a drinking bottle from home and so on. “So for this program we will focus on food and beverage traders.” he explained.

Meanwhile, Head of the Environmental Division of LLHPB PP ‘Aisyiyah Hening Parlan emphasized that actions are a reflection of religion. “The essence of religion is our behavior. “Our actions in making the use of plastic easier make us forget that it is part of destroying ourselves and destroying the earth.” he said.

Hening also shared steps that can be taken to reduce the use of single-use plastic to prevent damage to the earth. “First, campaign to protect the earth based on the verses of the Koran. Second, the education process, here we can distribute brochures to reduce plastic waste, not only for traders, but also for buyers. Third, examples or application in our daily activities.” he explained. According to Hening, we have to start from us first, after that the environment around us.

Various efforts have been made to reduce plastic in general in Pasar Jaya, for example with the Director’s Decree number 202 of 2020 which prohibits the use of single-use plastic. This was stated by Lasma Pujiarti Saragih, Head of the Business and Commercial Cooperation Division – Perumda Pasar Jaya. “We even impose sanctions on traders if they still use single-use plastic, they will be dealt with using warning letters 1 to 3, up to the closure of the business premises.” he explained. “I am very happy with this program being held at West Tebet Market. I hope this program can be implemented in traditional markets throughout DKI Jakarta Province.” Lasma said.
