Surabaya Plastic Free Market

Plastic Free Market Program in Surabaya City has been held at Citraland Fresh Market. From the program, there was a reduction in the use of plastic bags, where small plastic shopping bags were reduced by 18.83%, transparent plastic bags without handles were reduced by 34.95%, and large plastic shopping bags were reduced by 7.94%. Different from other cities, Plastic Free Market in Surabaya City was held when the city did not yet have regulations banning single-use plastic. With the example of the success from the program in the market, not long after this program was implemented, the Mayor of Surabaya issued Mayor’s Regulation Number 16 / 2022 concerning Reducing the Use of Plastic Bags, which also regulates restrictions on single-use plastic in traditional markets.
