Plastic Free Cooking and Shopping Competition with the Cihapit Community

Bandung (30 December 2021). To campaign for a Plastic Free and Environmentally Friendly Market in the City of Bandung, the Indonesian Plastic Bag Diet Movement (GIDKP), together with the Bandung City Government and the Regional Public Company (Perumda) Pasar Juara, held an activity entitled Plastic Free Cooking and Shopping Competition on December 30 2021 at Cihapit Village Office, Bandung City.

This Plastic Free Cooking and Shopping Competition activity is a series of activities from the Plastic Free Market Program trial to the community around the Cihapit Market area. This activity was attended by various elements, including the government, market managers, public figures, and the community around Cihapit Market.

Competition participants were divided into five groups, and each group was asked to shop for various kinds of foodstuffs without single-use plastic at Cihapit Market. “We hope the competition participants will realize that shopping without single-use plastic is not impossible. There also needs to be awareness among consumers apart from traders. “Of course, consumers and traders must be united in supporting the implementation of restrictions on single-use plastic at Cihapit Market,” said Rahyang Nusantara, National Coordinator of GIDKP.

After the participants finished shopping activities without single-use plastic at Cihapit Market, participants were asked to carry out cooking activities in groups with a typical Sundanese food menu. “Implementing plastic-free cooking and shopping competitions with community organizations around Cihapit Market is one form of our support for the trial of the Plastic-Free Market program at Cihapit Market. “That way, this activity can be our first step in socializing and making this program a success,” said Mrs. Inda Khoerul Bariah, Head of Cihapit Village.

Not only is he enthusiastic about the shopping and cooking competition without single-use plastic, but one of the competition participants also expressed his support for the implementation of the Plastic Free Market program at Cihapit Market, “This is a new lesson for me in the future to start reducing the use of single-use plastic at this time. shopping at the market,” said Mrs. Ardini, who comes from the Community Empowerment Institute.

Not stopping with the shopping and cooking competition without single-use plastic, the Plastic Free Market Program will continue to be implemented until February 2022. The hope is that this program will continue to be implemented in traditional markets and create a single-use plastic-free Indonesia.

About the Indonesian Plastic Bag Diet Movement (GIDKP).

GIDKP was started by a group of young people in 2010 who envisioned making Indonesia accessible from single-use plastic waste through advocacy, collaboration with business actors, and education. We have successfully encouraged Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali to implement a ban on single-use plastics, especially plastic bags. Our campaign was featured in an Indonesian documentary, Pulau Plastik, and an international documentary. It was awarded the News & Docs Emmy Awards in the Best Screenwriting Category, The Story of Plastic.
