Drives the Expansion of Reuse Initiatives, Plasticdiet Indonesia Encourage Stakeholders to Explore Reuse Business in Jakarta

Jakarta, August 12, 2024. After launching the Jakarta Reuse Movement program in 2022, Plasticdiet Indonesia continues to make efforts to mainstream reuse as the solution to replace single-use plastic. This is also in line with the implementation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P75/2019 concerning the Roadmap for Waste Reduction by Producers, which states that there are efforts to reuse, which in this case is in line with reuse, as part of waste management (specifically prevention) efforts.

This regulation also targets producers or manufacturers who are encouraged to actively participate in reducing their product packaging waste which aims to achieve the government’s target to ban several types of single-use plastic by 2030. To support this ambition, Plasticdiet Indonesia held a Reuse Tour in Jakarta, where meetings were held with the national government, local governments, manufacturing companies, and reuse business actors. The Reuse Tour event also shared experiences and provided knowledge to create a greater impact through advocacy and implementation of the reuse system in Indonesia.

“The purpose of Plasticdiet Indonesia in holding this Reuse Tour is to introduce the concept of reuse, in which many supporting elements exist. Starting from the form of reuse with refill and return, then aspects such as washing facilities, hygiene standards, and many more aspects that require cross-sector coordination and collaboration. Therefore, this Reuse Tour is carried out as an introduction and further introduction to the reuse system. We are also trying to build a stronger partnership to encourage the reuse solution not only in Indonesia but also in Asia region.” – Said Tiza Mafira as the Executive Director of Plasticdiet Indonesia.

In this Reuse Tour, the visit was made to the business operations of Kecipir, one of the reuse business actors that focuses on healthy and organic food products in the Sentul area, West Java, and also a visit to Alner, a start-up that provides daily necessities in reusable packaging. This Reuse Tour was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Ministry of Health, Jakarta Provincial Environmental Service, Jakarta Provincial Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Service, Jakarta Provincial Tourism and Creative Economy Service, and other stakeholders.

“Through this Reuse Tour, we get a lot of input that we can apply in the tourism industry and the creative economy, for example, we can encourage tourist attractions to start implementing a reuse system by using a reuse protocol in tourism areas,” said Mrs Undhan Sevisari, a representative of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

This Reuse Tour also provides an opportunity to see firsthand the important elements of the reuse business, namely the collection process, packaging washing, and refilling. The three processes that are important elements in the reuse business were obtained from participants’ visits to Kecipir and Alner, which also members of the Reuse Special Interest Group – a group of various organizations that encourage to create and implement of a comprehensive reuse system in Indonesia.

“It’s great to see the increasing number of parties who want to learn and support reuse efforts to reduce single-use plastic waste that is difficult to manage. I hope that after we take part in this Reuse Tour, the Jakarta Province’s plan to ban several types of single-use plastic with this reuse system will be more ready to be able to formulate regulations and be implemented.” Said Mr. Adib Awaludin as Head of the Waste Reduction Section of the Jakarta Provincial Environmental Service.
